Progress
Here we are, over half-way through my first legislative – and virtual! – session. It’s been a little over two months but I already have so much to share with you.
First, legislative progress. I was the prime sponsor of nine bills and a co-sponsor of seventy five. Four of the bills I sponsored were voted out of the House and are now working their way through the Senate. I am hoping it won’t be long until my first bill arrives on the Governor’s desk to be signed into law. Wow!
Second, Caucus progress. I was very proud to help relaunch the House Democrats Moms’ Caucus. It wasn’t that long ago that a mom of young children serving in the legislature was rare. Now there are eleven of us and last week we delivered our legislative priorities to Leadership that included affordable childcare, expanded Paid Family & Medical Leave, quality health care, racial justice, and a healthy environment. These are policies that aren’t just good for moms, they are good for all of our families.
Third, town hall meetings. This week we held our second virtual town hall meeting in the 36th Legislative District. Along with Sen. Reuven Carlyle and Rep. Noel Frame we heard from folks in every corner of our community. The big questions on everyone’s lips were about vaccines, school reopenings, homelessness and climate justice.
Fourth, COVID. Last week, Governor Inslee added preK-12 educators, school staff and licensed childcare workers to Washington’s current vaccine prioritization, and President Biden announced that everyone will be eligible for vaccines by May 1. There is light at the end of the tunnel!
Everyday I wake up excited to get to work for the people of Washington State. I continue to feel deep pride in holding elected office and I am thankful and grateful for the opportunity to serve.
Thank you, as always, for your faith in me to do this job.
